Biography of Conjunto Katharí, led by trombonist Demetrios Kastaris
Conjunto Katharí was founded by award winning trombonist Demetrios Kastaris and arts administrator, Hilda Kastaris in June of 2010 in Queens, New York. The primary purpose for founding the ensemble was to share the life changing Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Demetrios and Hilda chose to share this message through music prepared by musical arrangers, interpreted by singers, and performed by musicians that have all mastered their artistic skills at world class levels. Demetrios and Hilda wish to make all listeners feel welcome and loved regardless of the contrasting spiritual orientations of their audiences.
Conjunto (pronounced: cone – hoón – toe) means musical ensemble in Spanish, and Katharí (pronounced: ka – tha- reé) means pure and clean in Greek.
Demetrios was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1959 but grew up in the up-beat Jazz town of St. Louis, Missouri. He began taking trombone lessons in elementary school when he was only eight years old. Later, at age 20 he moved to Queens, New York, where he earned a merit based scholarship to study Music Education at New York University. During his NYU years, while only 21 years of age, Kastaris received his first big career break when he was hired to perform and record with Grammy and Tony Award winner, Galt MacDermot, (composer of the hit Broadway Musical “Hair”). While playing the trombone in MacDermot’s band for a year and a half, Demetrios worked closely with preeminent recording session Funk drummer, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, known as “the world’s most recorded drummer”. Purdie had recorded and performed with such artists as Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Steely Dan, and many others. Bernard was also the inventor of the famous “Purdie Shuffle” drum beat.
Demetrios graduated NYU with high academic honors, and went on to pass a very competitive audition process for entrance into the Manhattan School of Music for graduate studies in Jazz Performance on the trombone.While working on his Master’s degree at MSM, Kastaris performed in concerts with such extraordinary, trend setting Jazz artists as Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Red Rodney, and many others. During the same time period, Steve Turre, the legendary Jazz trombonist, conch shell player, and member of the Saturday Night Live Band, was a classmate of Kastaris’s as they both worked on their Master’s Degrees in Jazz Trombone.
While still a full time graduate student, Kastaris founded his secular Afro-Cuban Jazz orchestra The Latin-Jazz Coalition. Demetrios launched the ensemble in September of 1986, also in Queens, New York. The Coalition began performing numerous public concerts with grant funding from the Queens Council on the Arts.
After a refining period which encompassed fourteen years of performing countless live concerts together, the Latin-Jazz Coalition recorded their well-received debut CD, “Trombón con Sazón” (Trombone with Spice) with 24 artists. The recording was released on July 15, 2000 at a concert at Flushing Town Hall.“Trombón con Sazón” won the Latin-Jazz Coalition much critical acclaim on a world-wide scale through radio play, magazine articles, reviews, internet exposure, and live interviews. Trombón con Sazón was placed in the number one spot in February of 2001 in the “Top 20 Hit Parade Poll” of Latin Beat Magazine by Vicki Solá of WFDU 89.1 FM. The recording also received critical acclaim in the InternationalTrombone Association Journal.
Along with many other concerts, the Latin-Jazz Coalition performed under the leadership of Kastaris for the international delegates at the United Nations Building in New York City, and in Washington D.C. at the Eastern Trombone Workshop sponsored by the United States Army Band. They also performed in numerous concerts behind such historic icons of Latin Jazz as Tito Puente, Dave Valentin, Ray Barretto, Alfredo de la Fé, Oscar Hernández (founder of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra), Claudio Roditi, Steve Turre, Edy Martinez, Herman Olivera, Ray Vega, Vitín Avilés, and Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez Jr..
During this same time period, Demetrios was invited to perform with the legendary pianist, Larry Harlow (El Judillo Maravilloso) of the Fania All-Stars fame. Harlow and Kastaris signed contracts as band leaders simultaneously with Latin Cool Records in the Fall of 2002 with separate CD’s.
Kastaris continued performing in New York with numerous Latin Jazz groups, including the Palo Monte and Mafimba orchestras, led by Cuban singer Chico Alvarez, one appearance with the extraordinary singer Graciela, (adoptive sister of Machito), known as the First Lady of Latin Jazz, legendary conguero, Cándido, as well as a number of presentations with the young impeccable Puerto Rican drum set player, and Pastor’s son, Jotan Afanador. While only 21 years of age, Jotan won the title of world’s fastest drummer, performing an amazing 1123 single strokes in 60 seconds!
Soon after, the direction of Kastaris’s life changed dramatically when he visited a church in Long Island, New York on Sunday morning, September 4, 1994. About half way through the service, the Pastor stopped preaching and extended a general invitation to anyone who felt “weary and heavy laden”, or needed “rest for their soul” to come forward for a prayer. The reverend asked if anyone wanted to invite the “Prince of Peace” into their heart through a simple prayer. Kastaris proceeded to the front without any hesitation, prayed the prayer with great sincerity, passion, and tearful eyes. Demetrios felt renewed and changed forever! He felt “pure, clean” (katharos) and forgiven for the very first time in his life.
Demetrios began performing in Gospel concerts with many inspired, soulful ensembles. Based somewhat on his new recognizable spiritual transformation, Kastaris was asked to perform a trombone solo, interpreting the well-known tune “Amazing Grace” before the legendary multi-Grammy winning Eddie Palmieri Orchestra took the stage at a Palmieri Latin Jazz concert at Flushing Town Hall in Queens, New York, ten days after the 9-11 tragedy.
Demetrios began blending the up-tempo, fiery, Afro-Caribbean rhythms that he had learned while playing trombone in New York’s secular orchestras, with the up-lifting and spirit filled Gospel Music that he began to listen to and perform regularly.
On November 2, 2013Conjunto Katharí released their debut recording: “Te Exaltamos con Trombones” (We Exalt You with Trombones). The project includes the participation of 42 masterful musicians. It was recorded mostly in New Jersey, Queens, New York, and also some in Athens, Greece, with 78 minutes of music, 15 highly diverse compositions arranged specifically for the project, which include the musical genres of Puerto Rican Bomba, Afro-Cuban Rumba Guaguancó put to Gospel lyrics, traditional Gospel music, modern Gospel, Praise and Worship, Funk, Greek Kalamatiano (7/8 folkloric music from Kalamata, Greece), Greek Hasaposerviko with Gospel lyrics, Messianic Jewish Hora, J.S. Bach/ Baroque, and Byzantine Music. It is impossible to put Conjunto Katharí into any one specific genre category, although the great majority of their music by far is Afro-Latino based (or what is known as Latin) Christian music.

Η ορχήστρα Conjunto «Kathari» ιδρύθηκε από τον βραβευμένο τρομπονίστα Δημήτρη Καστάρη και την διαχειρίστρια των τεχνών, Χίλντα Καστάρη, τον Ιούνιο του 2010 στο Κουίνς, της Νέας Υόρκης. Ο ιεροκήρυκας ρώτησε εάν κανείς ήθελε να προσκαλέσει τον «Άρχοντα της Ειρήνης» μέσα στην καρδιά του με μια απλή προσευχή. Ο Δημήτρης προχώρησε μπροστά χωρίς κανέναν δισταγμό, έκανε την προσευχή με μεγάλη ειλικρίνεια, με θέρμη και με δακρυσμένα μάτια. Αισθάνθηκε ανανεωμένος και αλλαγμένος για πάντα! Αισθάνθηκε «αγνός, καθαρός» και συγχωρημένος για πρώτη φορά στη ζωή του.
Ο Δημήτρης ξεκίνησε τις εμφανίσεις του σε συναυλίες της μουσικής Gospel μαζί με πολλά εμπνευσμένα συγκροτήματα. Με βάση την σχετικά καινούρια εμφανής πνευματική αλλαγή, ο Δημήτρης Καστάρης κλήθηκε να παρουσιάσει ένα σόλο κομμάτι με το τρομπόνι, ερμηνεύοντας τη γνωστή μελωδία «Θαυμάσια Χάρις» προτού να ανέβει στη σκηνή η ορχήστρα του θρυλικού Eddie Palmieri (νικητή πολλών βραβείων Γκράμι) στη συναυλία Palmieri Latin Jazz σε μια περιοχή του Κουίνς της Νέας Υόρκης, δέκα μέρες μετά από την τραγωδία των δίδυμων πύργων της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου.
Ο Δημήτρης άρχισε να αναμιγνύει τους φλογερούς ρυθμούς της Αφρό-Καραϊβικής μουσικής που είχε διδαχτεί ενώ έπαιζε το τρομπόνι σε κοσμικές ορχήστρες της Νέας Υόρκης, μαζί με τη γεμάτη με το πνεύμα μουσική Gospel την οποία είχε αρχίσει να ακούει και να εκτελεί τακτικά.

Historia del Conjunto Katharí dirigido por el trombonist Demetrios Kastaris
El Conjunto Katharí fue fundado por el galardonado trombonista Demetrios Kastaris y la administradora de artes Hilda Kastaris, en junio de 2010 en Queens, Nueva York. El propósito principal de fundar el conjunto fue compartir el transformador mensaje del Evangelio de Jesucristo. Demetrios e Hilda optaron por compartir este mensaje a través de música preparada por arreglistas musicales, interpretada por cantantes y ejecutada por músicos que dominan sus habilidades artísticas con calidad de clase mundial. Mientras estudiaba para obtener su maestría, Kastaris fundó su orquesta secular de jazz afrocubano The Latin-Jazz Coalition. Lanzó el conjunto en septiembre de 1986 en Queens, Nueva York. La Coalition empezó a ofrecer numerosos conciertos públicos con subvenciones del Queens Council on the Arts.
Tras un período de desarrollo y perfeccionamiento de 14 años que incluyó la realización de conciertos desarrollando una identidad musical y un estilo únicos, la Latin-Jazz Coalition grabó su aclamado primer disco compacto “Trombón con Sazón” con 24 artistas. La grabación fue lanzada el 15 de julio de 2000 en un concierto en el Flushing Town Hall. “Trombón con Sazón” le brindó a la Latin-Jazz Coalition la aclamación irrestricta de los críticos a escala mundial a través de la radio, artículos de revistas, comentarios, exposición a la Internet y entrevistas en vivo. En febrero de 2001 Trombón con Sazón fue colocado en el primer puesto de la “Top 20 Hit Parade Poll” de la revista Latin Beat por Vicki Solá de WFDU 89.1 FM. La grabación también recibió elogios de la crítica en la International Trombone Association Journal.
Junto con muchos otros conciertos, la Latin-Jazz Coalition tocó bajo la dirección de Kastaris para los delegados internacionales en el edificio de las Naciones Unidas en la ciudad de Nueva York y en Washington DC en el Eastern Trombone Workshop patrocinado por la United States Army Band. También realizó numerosos conciertos con iconos históricos del jazz latino tales como Tito Puente, Dave Valentín, Ray Barretto, Alfredo de la Fé, Oscar Hernández (fundador de la Spanish Harlem Orchestra), Claudio Roditi, Steve Turre, Edy Martínez, Herman Olivera, Ray Vega, Vitín Avilés y Johnny “Dandy” Rodríguez Jr..
Durante este mismo período Demetrios fue invitado a tocar el trombón en varios conciertos con el legendario pianista Larry Harlow (El Judío Maravilloso) del famoso conjunto Fania All-Stars. Harlow y Kastaris firmaron contratos como líderes de banda al mismo tiempo con Latin Cool Records en el otoño de 2002 con discos compactos por separado.
Kastaris continuó actuando en Nueva York con numerosos grupos de jazz latino, incluyendo las orquestas Palo Monte y Mafimba, dirigidas por el cantante cubano Chico Álvarez, una aparición con la legendaria cantante Graciela (hermana adoptiva de Machito) conocida como la Primera Dama del Jazz Latino, el legendario conguero cubano Cándido, así como una serie de presentaciones con el joven maestro puertorriqueño de la batería e hijo de un pastor, Jotan Afanador, quien con solo 21 años de edad ganó el concurso en el que fue nombrado el baterista más rápido del mundo, al lograr la sorprendente cantidad de 1.123 golpes simples en 60 segundos.
En un acontecimiento personal, trascendental y muy espiritual, la vida de Kastaris cambió para siempre cuando visitó una iglesia en Long Island, Nueva York el domingo 4 de septiembre de 1994 por la mañana. Un amigo lo llevó para que escuchara la predicación del evangelio. Más o menos a mitad del servicio el pastor hizo una invitación general para que cualquiera que estuviera oyendo pasara al frente y orara para invitar a Jesús a entrar en su vida. Kastaris se adelantó rápidamente, sin vacilar, oró y ese día se convirtió en una nueva criatura. Por primera vez en su vida se sintió “puro y limpio” y nunca ha sido el mismo desde ese crucial día.
Demetrios empezó a actuar en conciertos cristianos con muchos conjuntos inspirados y conmovedores. Se le solicitó realizar un solo de trombón, interpretando el conocido himno evangélico “Sublime Gracia” antes de que la legendaria Orquesta de Eddie Palmieri, ganadora de múltiples premios Grammy, subiera al escenario en un concierto de Palmieri Latin Jazz en el Flushing Town Hall en Queens, Nueva York, diez días después de la tragedia del 9-11.
Demetrios empezó a mezclar los dinámicos y ardientes ritmos afrocaribeños, que había aprendido mientras tocaba trombón en orquestas seculares, con la edificante y espiritual música gospel que empezó a escuchar y a tocar con regularidad.
El 2 de noviembre de 2013 el Conjunto Katharí lanzó su primera grabación “Te Exaltamos Trombones” con la participación de 42 músicos magistrales. Fue grabado mayormente en Nueva Jersey, Queens, Nueva York y parcialmente en Atenas, Grecia, con 78 minutos de música y 15 composiciones muy diversas arregladas específicamente para el proyecto que incluyen los géneros musicales de bomba puertorriqueña, rumba guaguancó afrocubana con letras gospel, música gospel tradicional, gospel moderna, alabanza y adoración, funk, kalamatiana griega (7/8 de la música folklórica de Kalamata, Grecia), hasaposerviko griega con letras gospel, jora judía mesiánica, JS Bach / barroco, bizantino y más.
Es imposible poner al Conjunto Katharí en cualquier categoría específica de género, aunque la gran mayoría de su música es, con mucho, de base afrolatina (lo que se conoce como música cristiana latina).
